Cannon Power Group announced the completion of Phase I of Windy Points/Windy Flats construction. The project is located in Goldendale, Washington, and should generate 500 MW of clean energy once completed sometime in 2010. The wind farm stretches over 26 miles of ridgeline along the Columbia River.
It is projected that the project will provide some 150 local jobs for the period of two years, including more than 20 direct jobs, 27 local subcontractors and additional 23 local vendors. About 75-80% of the workforce are locals. The project will generate tax income for the local development, as well as income for the local economy, something that's badly needed in the current economic downturn.
Phase I included contstruction of more than 20 miles of roads, 9 miles of transmission lines, project substations, and foundations and installments of 62 turbines in total – 42 2.3 MW Siemens units and 20 2.0 MW REpower units. Phase II will add 21 miles of roads, 10 miles of transmission lines, more substations, and an additional 88 2.3 MW Siemens wind turbines.
It should be noted that the project layout has seen some significant changes to ensure none of the turbines are visible from the Columbia Scenic Gorge Area.
