Albania is planning to build three hydropower plants on the Vjose River, in the south of the country. The plans were announced by Gjergi Bojaxhi, head of the state-run power utility Korporata Energjitike Shqiptare (KESH), but the planned investments still have to approved by the country's parliament before anything happens.
Although the planned capacity of the new hydropower plants was not stated, it is rumored their combined production could be as much as 40% of the current total output of the country's three main hydropower plants currently in operation, on the Drin River, in the country's north. More than 90% of domestically produced electricity in Albania is generated by hydropower, now badly hit by droughts. Furthermore, Albania has experienced a serious deficit of electricity, with frequent cut-outs across the country, including the capital Tirana.
