Suntech Power announced it will build a 1.5 MW solar power system in Huaian City, in the Jiangsu Province, China. The project will be done in collaboration with Jiangsu Guoxin Asset Management Group Ltd. This solar power plant, to be completed in October 2009, will be the first such project with installed capacity above 1 MW connected to the grid.

The solar power plant will occupy about 19,000 m2 of the rooftop of building housing a subsidiary of Jiangsu Guoxin Group in HuaiAn City.

This project by itself may not be a notable one in terms of installed capacity, but together with the Chinese governement's subsidies for renewable energy projects in the provinces, among which solar electricity, is an important initial step in pushing the solar market forward in China. Suntech is already involved in other smaller solar power projects in China, most notable of which a 3.5 MW BIPV project for the Shanghai World Expo.

I think solar energy is going to go mainstream soon. It won't be long before there is cost parity with conventional fuels. Then it will explode.
