UAE Abu Dhabi based Masdar has successfully connected the first solar power plant to the country's power grid. The solar photovoltaic power plant can generate about 10 MW of clean power. This is the first time a relatively large solar power plant has been connected to a power grid in the Middle East.
The generated power will be used to supply ongoing construction projects in the carbon-free city of Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi has plans to generate 7% of electricity from renewable energy by 2020. Masdar is 100% owned by the Abu Dhabi government, and was set up especially for the development of renewable energy projects. The company, also known by the alias Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co, is planning to invest some USD 15 billion into solar, wind and hydrogen projects in the United Arab Emirates.
Masdar is actively investing and participating in projects outside of UAE, for example Masdar is one of the three partners in the London Array project.
