Fortum, Seabased and the University of Uppsala have joined efforts to test wave power near Lysekil, on the west coast of Sweden. The newly wed partners have applied for investment support to the Swedish government, with a goal to build a full-scale wave power test facility. Construction started back in 2004.
The current status of wave power, and prior experiences, indicate this form of renewable energy holds great potential for the country. The Swedish Energy Agency had decided to make wave power one of the priority projects and will set aside about EUR 82 million for a three-year period of renewable energy research. Interest is growing in the wave power plant, and more the industry is expected to grow rapidly, once a working full-scale test plant has been completed.
