There are plans to build a 200 MW wind farm northeast of Glenrock, Wyoming. Duke Energy has started collecting wind data in the area about two years ago, and it the results have shown an abundant and proven wind potential.
The company also acquired Tierra Energy and Catamount Energy at about the same time, for wind generation projects.
The new wind farm, called Top of the World Windpower Project, is going to take up about 17,000 acres of land. It represents a USD 400 million investment. It's located northeast of Glenrock, and is close to the transmission lines, which is a welcome advantage.
Depending on Duke's choice of turbines, the wind farm could end up with 133 GE 1.5 MW units or 110 Siemens units. Once completed, the 200 MW wind farm will be able to supply electricity to 50,000 to 60,000 average homes annually.
The future of the project depends solely on whether Duke Energy is able to sign a long-term power purchase agreement with a power company. Until then, the wind farm will remaing a "tentative developmental project".
