Fortum and Metsähallitus have begun a joint effort for the development of a wind power project in Finnish Lapland, in the Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää area, northern Finland. This area has previously been marked as a wind power potential area, and is included in the draft regional land use plan of Mountain Lapland and in the regional land use plan of NOrthern Lapland.

According to the announcement, the new wind farm will consist of about 18 wind turbines, with 2-3 MW each, and will produce up to 120 GWh annually. The production would represent about 40% of the total electricity consumption in the area.

What follows are the environmental impact assessment and wind measurements, to be followed by technical pre-planning. Provided all the conditions, both administrative and technical, are met, the wind farm could being power production in 2013.
