fortumFortum announced it is planning to make further investments in "climate-benign" energy production. The investments will include carbon capture and storage technology, heat production, wind power and wave power.

Fortum is in a joint demonstration project with Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) to develop CCS technology. The two companies are developing the Meri-Pori power plant, aiming to reduce CO2 production significantly, as well as SOx and NOx emissions. The EU Commission has launched an inititative to start large scale CCS demo projects by 2015, and the Meri-Pori power plant is one of these projects.

Fortum has an investment program which will aim to expand the installed renewable energy capacities in Europe by 1200 MW in the Nordic countries, the Baltics and Poland. About 80% of the investments are for new CO2-free energy production projects. In heat production, the company will aim to achieve emission reductions by introducing biofuels and waste-derived fuels instead of coal.

Fortum is aiming to increase wind power production. The company is conducting several wind power projects in Finland, Sweden and other countries where the company has presence at the moment. In Sweden and Portugal, the company is involved in wave power development, and sees great potential in this area, citing that as much as 10% of global electricity needs can be satisfied purely from wave power facilities.
