IRENA

The president of Mexico, Felipe de Jesús Calderón Hinojosa, announced recently in the presence of the Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Hélène Pelosse, that Mexico will agree to sign the statute of IRENA. The announcement was made at the Global Renewable Energy Forum "Scaling-up renewables" in Léon, Mexico. Mexico will be the 138th country that has joined IRENA and the president is confident that "IRENA can now count on Mexico."

In Latin America, nearly 20% of the total energy supply comes from renewable sources, from sugarcane waste, biomass and geothermal energy. In Mexico in particular, about 23% of the total energy is renewable and 19% comes from large hydro plants. The target for the country is to reach 26% in 2010.

IRENA was established this year in January by 75 countries and has become an international governmental agency for renewable energy. The statute has been signed by 137 countries to this point.
