Ontario is on the road to becoming one of the top suppliers of green energy in Canada. The largest solar farm in the province has now started producing power in the township of Stone Mills, near Napanee.
One of the top climate change initiatives in Canada has been to reduce dirty, coal-fired power generation, and with the opening of this solar plant a huge step toward achieving this goal has been taken. Ontario is soon to become one of the top suppliers of installed solar capacity in North America, with plans for two more solar projects coming up by the end of this year.
First Light Solar Park is the result of a joint venture between SkyPower and SunEdison Canada. In Canada, it is the largest-scale commercial solar farm operation to date. More than 10 million kWh of renewable energy are expected to be generated by the farm in the first year, this being enough to power 10,000 households. The solar farm spreads out over an area of 90 acres, housing more than 126,000 solar panels.
Nearly 1,200 megawatts of new, renewable energy resources have been added to Ontario since the fall of 2003. The province has undergone several projects, varying in size, anywhere from the small residential systems to those on buildings, institutions and schools.
