titan-enfinity-indiaLast Monday, at the Solarcon 2009, Enfinity (Belgium based global renewable energy developer) and Titan Energy Systems (India based PV module manufacturer) announced they will collaborate on solar power projects totalling 1 GWp in capacity in the Indian province of Andhra Pradesh. The development of these projects is expected to take place over the next five years, and will be installed on about 3000 acres of land.

Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (APIIC), otherwise an undertaking of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, will allocate about 3000 acres in a long lease, in the villages of Thumalla, Dademavaripalli, Pulikuntapalli, Karimireddypalli and Lokogipalli and the industrial park at Amadugur near Kadiri. All these places are located in the Anantapur District in the province.

India represents a market with high potential for solar PV growth. The Indian government has set a goal for solar energy in the country – 20 GW of solar power capacity by 2020, and 100 GW by 2030 and 200 GW by 2050. The country is experiencing rapid growth in energy and electricity needs, with a persistant deficit of supply. India is currently overdependent on coal for electricity generation, even though the country has abundant solar energy potential. With over 300 sunny days a year, solar energy is one of the best renewable energy resources the country can tap in order to satisfy growing consumer demand.
