Duke Energy is in the process of upgrading and extpanding capacity of the Jocassee pumped-storage hydropower facility, in South Carolina. The facility will be receiving two new hydroturbines for units 1 and 2, upgrading the power generators and increasing installed capacity by 50 MW.

The two turbines, each with a 23 feet (6.9 m) diameter, weighing almost 150 tons, will be delivered by Voith Hydro from its manufacturing facility in York, Pennsylvania. The first turbine is arriving to Salem on August 9, while the second will be delivered on location in early September.

Once the upgrade is complete, the Jocassee facility will have 195 MW of installed capacity per unit, or 390 MW combined. Jocassee has units 3 and 4 as well, which were upgraded in 2006 in 2007. The facility uses to reservoirs for pumped storage during low consumption periods – Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee.
