RWE Innogy and ABB have signed an agreement under which ABB is to supply and install a subsea power cable connecting the offshore wind farm Nordsee Ost in the North Sea to the mainland.

The 63 km cable, having 16 centimeters in diameter, is to provide a high performance power connection between the wind farm and the mainland substation. The contract represents a value of about EUR 10 million.

Nordsee Ost is to feature 48 6 MW wind turbines, with a total of 295 MW of installed capacity. It is located about 33 km northeast of the island of Helgoland. Completion is scheduled for 2013. Once fully operational, the wind farm will supply about 295,000 average German households with clean electricity.
