Iberdrola is leading the VIDA project (advanced technologies in the integrated recovery of algae) with the goal of developing new micralgae-based technologies. The project has been selected by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, as part of the Cenit program.
The VIDA project represents an investment of about EUR 20 million. Iberdrola's tasks in the project will include selecting, cultivating and then recovering microalgae which will then be used for carbon capture and biofuel production. The project is being executed by Iberdrola and 15 other companies, including major ones like Repsol or Alga Energy. Twenty-five research centers in ten autonomous communities will be utilized for the purposes of this project.
The VIDA program is hoped to be a chance to create a new segment in the energy industry, but also create new jobs in Spain.
