
Origin Energy announced the company, as part of a consortium of companies, has been granted the concession for exploring geothermal potential in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The consortium, made up of Origin Energy (Australia), Tata Power (India) and PT Supraco (Indonesia), are going to be exploring potential in the Sorik Marapi concession, estimated to have between 200 and 300 MW of power geothermal capacity.
Testing at the Sorik Marapi will be conducted over the next 18 months, and if the results are successful, a subsequent appraisal program will also be conducted. Eventual construction of geothermal facilities coudl start in late 2012, pending a positive outcome of the testing and appraisal period.
