Iberdrola announced investment plans for the US market, inolving a total of USD 6 billion in investments in the energy sector by 2012. Of the total amount, USD 3.9 billion is aimed at new wind farm projects, while USD 2.1 billion will be used to improve power supply quality.
The development of new wind farms will be done through the company's clean energy arm, Iberdrola Renovables, which is already present in the US energy market, as the second largest wind energy produced, with 4.7 GW of installed wind capacity. The new investment and activity plan will be possible partly thanks to a USD 1 billion grant the company has been awarded by the US government.
Power supply improvements will concentrate on transmission lines (mostly in the state of Maine), as well as other areas, serving more than 2.4 million customers. The company has already made improvements in this sector resulting in about a 10% increase in the electrical service quality provided to the customers.
