Iberdrola recently announced the Wikinger offshore wind project has entered its engineering phase. The EUR 1.6 billion project, Iberdrola's first offshore wind project in Germany, is to be completed by 2016. Once finished, it will have up to 400 MW of installed capacity, and be capable of producing enough clean electrical energy annually to supply about 350,000 average German homes.

Wikinger is located about 30 km off the coast of the Island of RĂ¼gen, in the Baltic Sea. The wind turbines are to be installed at water depths of about 40 meters, making this project one of the largest offshore deepwater wind farms in the world. Iberdrola submitted the application for the Wikinger project in September 2011, and completed the initial phase of the process with the presentation of design and the environmental assessment report.
