USDA backs Abengoa's biomass bioethanol production at Hugoton facility

Abengoa has received backing from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the production of cellulosic bioethanol from biomass at the company's Hugoton production facility, located in Kansas. USDA has approved a total of four new programs for biomass derived biofuels as part of the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP), in the US states of California, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington. The program for Kansas will be carried out near the company's factory, capable of producing 100 million liters of cellulosic bioethanol.

ITOCHU and Bunge begin production of bioethanol in Brazil

ITOCHU Corporation and Bunge Limited have begun production of bioethanol through a joint venture company, Pedro Afonso Açúcar e Bioenergia, located in Tocantins, Northern Brazil. Bunge owns 80% of this joint venture. ITOCHU is investing a total of about USD 800 million into two facilities for the production of bioethanol, the second one being in Minas Gerais, in the south east of the country.

Partnsership formed to produce aviation biofuel in Australia

Virgin Australia and Renewable Oil Corporation have formed a partnership to produce a sustainable aviation biofuel. The companies plan to produce biofuel from mallees, a eucalypt tree which can be grown in a sustainable manner in various parts of Australia. The innovative process called fast pyrolysis, developed by Dynamotive, will be used to process mallees and transform them into biofuel. The goal of this partnership, which brings together various companies with special expertise, will aim to commercialize the new biofuel in Western Australia.

ITOCHU invests in Gainsville Renewable Energy Center in Florida

ITOCHU Corporation announced an investment in the Gainsville Renewable Energy Center in Florida, through indirect affiliates. The company has this way entered into equity participation in this project jointly developed by BayCorp Holdings, Energy Management and Tyr Energy (wholly owned by ITOCHU as independent power producer). The project will have 100 MW of capacity, and will be a biomass power facility.

Shell and Cosan launch multibillion biofuels JV

Shell and Cosan announced the launch of their multi-billion dollar joint venture which will produce low-carbon biofuel. The main product to be produced and distribute will be ethanol, which is the lowest-carbon biofuel commercially available on the market. The production will rely on the supply of Brazilian sugar cane as the source of material for ethanol production.

RWE taps US forests for biomass fuel production

RWE Innogy announced the company has commissioned its facility for the production of wood pellets from green wood. The production facility is located in the US state of Georgia, near Waycross, and will output 750,000 tons of wood pellets annually. It covers about 300 hectares in land area. The project and the development of the port of Savannah, represent an investment of about EUR 120 million.

US DoE aims more funding at clean energy reserach projects in US

A-Power in contract to build biomass power plant in China

A-Power Energy Generation Systems announced the company has entered into an EPC contract to build a biomass power plant with two 15 MW units. The power plant has been ordered by Xin County Guangchao Biomass Power Generation. The contract is worth RMB 200.7 million (USD 30.5 million).

BP expanding biofuel operations in Brazil

BP announced the company is to acquire a majority stake in Brazilian ethanol and sugar producer Companhia Nacional de Açúcar e Álcool (CNAA) from Açúcar e Álcool Fundo de Investimento em Participações and Açúcar e Álcool II Fundo de Investimento em Participações, thus expanding the company's production capacity in Brazil to about 9 million barrels of ethanol (equivalent). BP will pay about USD 680 million for an 83% stake in CNAA, and will refinance the full amount of the company's outstanding long term debt.

Itochu invests in Benefuel and advanced biodiesel technology

Itochu Corporation (Japan) has made an investment in Benefuel, acquiring a 4% stake in the company. Benefuel has developed a new technology for the production of biodiesel fuel in a more efficient and cost-effective way. The company's technology rests on a catalyst product which allows the production of biofuel from fat and oil which contain fatty acids.
