Enel Green Power and Terrae in partnership to strengthen Italian agro-energy sector

Enel Green Power has signed a partnership agreement with Terrae (Italy), an agro-industrial company aiming to redevelop the beet and sugar sector. As part of the agreement EGP has obtained a 15% stake in the company.

VIASPACE signs MoU for king grass production in Indonesia

VIASPACE Green Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Provident Agro from Jakarta, Indonesia, for the possibility of production of giant king grass in this country. Provident Agro is to manufacture a minimum of 300,000 metric tons of pellets from giant king grass, mostly for exporting to the European market.

Provident Agro will initially plant 25 acres of giant king grass as a test pilot project using seedings provided by VIASPACE. No other details nor financial terms of the agreement were disclosed.

SG Biofuels starts operations in Brazil – elite seeds for Jatropha growers

SG Biofuels (based in Sao Paolo, Brazil) has formally started operations in Brazil, through its subsidiary SG Biofuels Brazil. The new company will develop elite seeds for Jatropha, a biomass crop used for the production of biofuels. In order to expand its R&D activities, SG Biofuels has hired Fernando Reinach, a genomics innovator, to be the company's senior advisor for this market.

Denmark's biomass expansion opportunity – potato residues

Cuba getting 30 MW biomass power plant

Havana Energy (UK) and Zerus SA (Cuba) have signed a joint venture agreement to develop a pilot 30 MW biomass power plant at Ciro Redondo Sugar Mill, located about 400 km of Havana. Additionally, four other plants are also planned in the future. The power plans will be developed adjacent to sugar mills, which process sugar cane. Biomass residue from the process, sugarcane bagasse, will be used as fuel in the power plants.

npower renewables starts construction at Markinch biomass plant

npower renewables, subsidiary of RWE Innogy, announced the start of construction at what's to be the largest biomass combined heat and power (CHP) plant in the UK – in Markinch (Fife, Scotland). The power plant is to have 50 MW of installed capacity, and will deliver up to 120 metric tons of steam per hour. The project's cost is at about EUR 235 million. Construction of the power plant will take about two years, and employ about 400 people.

GE Energy Financial Services invests in CoolPlanetBiofuels

GE Energy Financial Services has joined North Bridge Venture Partners in B round investment in CoolPlanetBiofuels, with a USD 8 million investment into the start-up company. CoolPlanetBiofuels is developing a technology that allows easy, and mobile conversion of low-grade biomass material into high-grade fuel. The previous financing round for the company last year, was also lead by North Bridge Venture Partners.

Iberdrola Renovables begins construction of 26.8 MW biomass plant in US

Iberdrola Renovables has commenced construction of the 26.8 MW Lakeview biomass power plant in Lake County, east Oregon, US. The power plant will use forestry biomass to produce heat for its boilers. The biomass will come from cleaning and pruning operations in the forests located in the south and the east of the state. The power plant will be only about 20 miles away from California, and close to the nearest transmission lines.
