Statoil is moving its wind energy sector focus towards offshore wind energy. The company has announced the sale of its onshore wind assets in Norway, under two sales agreements for partial ownership stakes in Sarepta Energi (50%), and wind power projects in Finnmark. The sale is part of the company's strategy to switch its focus on offshore wind energy, as a way to better utilize the company's core capabilities in the offshore sector.

Fraunhofer's existing blade testing facility in Bremerhaven.
As part of the country's effort to further expand the use of wind energy, Germany is making further investments into wind energy research and development facilities. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy System Technology (IWES), the German government is building a new research and testing facility in Bremerhaven called the Dynamic Nacelle Laboratory (DyNaLab). The facility will do research and testing on drive powers up to 10 MW in capacity. It will occupy about 2000 square meters of area, and will be used initially to test nacelles with capacities between 2 and 7.5 MW in capacity, covering a broad range of wind turbines aimed at the offshore wind sector.

China Ming Yang Wind Power announced recently the company has entered into a framework agreement with the Ganzhou procinve government (China), granting the company several benefits ranging from priority access to rare earths, exclusive rights for wind farm operation in the province, and priority for installation of wind turbines at wind farm projects in the province. Furthermore, China Ming Yang will be given the right to invest in Ganzhou Rare Earth Mineral Industry Group, a state owned company with rare earth development rights in the several counties of the Ganzhou province.

Isolux Corsan has been awarded the contract to build a transmission line in Kenya, the largest in that country, which will be capable of tranporting power generated at the future Lake Turkana wind farm. The wind farm is to have 300 MW of installed capacity, making it the largest such facility on the African continent.

Bosch Solar announced an iPhone app that will allow anyone using their iPhone or iPad to assess the solar energy yield on the location of their choice. The app will allow us to get an idea of the potential for generating electricity from solar energy from open surface areas such as rooftops, but other open surfaces such as parking lots, open land areas and other locations, would also be covered we suppose. Based on the surface area, solar module type, and their orientation (tip 1: always try facing them South if they are stationery, for max exposure), the app will calculate the optimal energy yield along with the expected feed-in-tariff for that location (tip 2: subtract cost per kWh from grid from feed-in-tariff per kWh, and that's your profit).

Abengoa announced the company has signed an agreement with Alfanar Construction for sustainable energy project development in Saudi Arabia. The collaboration, although focusing on the development and construction of combined cycle and cogeneration power plants, may also include solar power projects.

GE Energy has ented into an investment and licensing agreement with eSolar. The agreement allows GE to deploy its Integrated Solar Combined Cycle (ISCC) technology to customers around the world. The technology will complement eSolar's solar thermal tower CSP technology, and offer these kind of facilities the flexibility to ensure a steady supply of power non-stop with the use of gas turbine electricity generators. Along with GE, MetCap Energy Investments, and a Turkish investor and developer are also taking part in this investment.

US Department of Energy announced the availability of more than USD 27 million, as part of the SunShot Initiative, as funding that will help reduce the cost of solar energy projects, which is one of the main parameters affecting the current price of electricity from solar energy conversion. The funding will be split into two portions, each dealing with a particular set of problems.

Enel Green Power (EGP) and Gas Natural Fenosa have agreed to split the ownership of EUFER (Enel Union Fenosa Renovables) evenly, thereby terminating the JV company. EUFER was established in 2003, and has been operating in the renewables and co-generation industries in Spain and Portugal.
