Italy to extend solar incentives by three months

Italy is going to impose a restrictive set of measures starting this summer which will reduce incentives for solar power project development considerably. The country's support for solar power has been generous in the past years, resulting in the country becoming the second largest solar power market in Europe. However, the country has to ease the burden on consumers, by introducing reductions in incentives for this clean power source in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Germany to simplify approval process for offshore wind

Germany has plans to reduce the amount of bureaucracy involved in approving offshore wind energy projects, a problem that has been seen as one of the main reasons for the slow development of offshore wind capacity in this European country. The draft bill regulating this process in a new way will concentrate all responsability for approval of offshore wind projects in one state authority.

Guatemala's 800 MW tender attracts some big power players

Guatemala's tender for purchasing 800 MW of power has attracted interest from many local and foreigh power generators. So far, at least 10 companies have purchased tender documentation (bidding rules), and are preparing to present their bids in late October this year.

Guatemala is seeking a total of 800 MW of power from various power generation sources, but at least 60% of these sources have to come from renewable energy – solar, wind, hydro, and other sources. Only about 40% of the sources are allowed to be from fossil fuels. These "traditional" power plants are allowed to bid for contracts of up to 5 years, while "clean energy source" power plants will enjoy 15 year contract periods.

Siemens to supply components for two HVDC lines in China

Siemens has been chosen as the supplier of key equipment for two long-distance power transmission lines which are to connect clean energy hydropower facilities in the Yunnan province with consumers in the Guangdong province, both in the southwest of the country. The order comes from China Southern Power Grid Company, from Guangzhou, and is worth about EUR 250 million.

US DoE aims more funding at clean energy reserach projects in US

The US Departmnet of Energy announced more funding, USD 130 million from the Advanced Reserach Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), for the development of five programs that could bring benefits to the US energy industry.

Total acquires Tenesol and its domestic operations

Total announced an agreement with EDF under which Total has acquired the remaining 50% share in Tenesol, of which Total already owned a 50% share. This acquisition puts Total in charge of Tenesol's French domestic operations. Overseas department and territory operations are still 50% owned by EDF.

Panama soon to reach 90% electricity from renewables

Panama is going to reach 90% of electricity supply from renewables very soon. What's a long term dream for many nations around the world, is close to reality for this country in Central America. The country's power portfolio relies heavily on hydropower. This clean energy resource will soon reach 1114 MW of installed capacity, by the end of 2011.

SSE planning offshore wind turbine testing facility in Scotland

Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) is planning to build a testing facility for offshore wind turbines at the Clydeport Hunterton site, in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The new facility will be an extension of the already existing Centre for Engineering Excellence for Renewable Energy (CEERE) in Glasgow. The center has been established in partnership with major wind turbine suppliers. It will be used for testing of up to three next generation offshore wind turbines at a time. The new facility is subject to approvals by the North Ayrshire Council. If permitted, construction could start in 2012.

Wärtsilä and Aker Solutions developing a new offshore turbine installation vessel

Wärtsilä and Aker Solutions have joined "brain power" to develop a new "cutting edge high performance" offshore wind turbine installation vessel. Wärtsilä will provide the new vessels with the design, electrical power generation, propulsion machinery (the company's specialty) and automation systems. The jacking system for the future installation vessel will be provided by Aker Solutions. Both companies will additionally provide non-stop global service for maintenance, repairs and supplies for the future vessels.

ABB lands major UHVDC link contract in India

ABB announced the company has been awarded the contract to deliver an 800 kV transmission link in India, from the northeastern part of the country, to the city of Agra, covering in total a distance of 1728 kilometers. The link project is worth about USD 900 million, and it is to be used mainly for the purpose of connecting the numerous hydropower plants located in the northeastern parts of the country, to the national power grid.
