Canadian Solar supplies 9 MW of modules for project in Spain

Canadian Solar has supplied a total of 9 MW of solar PV modules for the 9 MW solar power plant in Spain, developed by the OPDE Group. Commissioning of the newly installed system is scheduled to happen during Q4 2011.

EGP awarded lots for development of 60 MW of PV capacity

Enel Green Power has been awarded the maximum allowed amount of concessions under the terms of the solar energy tender by Difesa Servizi, allocated from military land for PV installations. Two lots have been awarded to EGP, providing room and conitions for the development of up to 60 MW of PV capacity. The lots cover about 190 hectares of land, and offer high solar radiation conditions.

BrightSource Energy introduces energy storage to its power purchase agreements

BrightSource Energy has added its SolarPLUS thermal energy storage capability to power purchase agreements. In particular, the company has added SolarPLUS to three PPA's signed with Southern California Edison (SCE). Basically, the PPA's now include the option to store energy for use during low-generation hours (overcast skies, nighttime, etc), increasing the availability of clean power to power utilities and distributors. Stored energy is easily dispatchable on demand, available to power grid operators during peak consumption periods.

Serbia planning 1 GW solar PV park

Serbia has recently signed a non-binding agreement with Securum Equity Partners (based in Luxembourg) for the development of a 1 GW solar PV park in the southern part of the country. In this context, Securum will be establishing a fund by the end of 2011, in cooperation with Amicorp Fund Services, called the NEPER Fund. This fund will be used as the financial vehicle for realizing this large solar project, and will take the project through all the necessary steps, involving administrative and regulatory activities, power purchase agreements, to the very last stage of construction and commissioning.

Google pulls plug on RE<C – shares results

Google is downsizing its external operations, as the company's CEO Larray Page is steering the company back to its core business. Among the projects getting shut down or abandoned is RE<C (Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal), a research program initiated by the company in order to find ways to reduce the cost of renewable energy and make it cheaper than coal. The research efforts were mostly concentrated on solar power technology.

MetCap expanding IRCC power plant in Turkey

MetCap Energy Investments (Turkey) and GE have entered into an agreement for the expansion of the Dervish integrated renewables combined cycle (IRCC) power plant in Karaman, Turkey. The project's installed power generating capacity will be doubled using GE's FlexEfficiency 50 technology.

GCL Poly and CGN jointly developing 1 GW of solar capacity in Shanxi province

JinkoSolar supplying 14 MW of solar modules for projects in UK

JinkoSolar has been chosen as the preferred supplier of solar modules for three solar projects in the UK, totalling in 14 MW of capacity. The supply agreement was reached with AEE Renewables and EPC Graess Solartechnik, which are developing the three projects.

Areva plans to sell 300 MW of solar thermal systems by end of 2011

Areva expects up to 300 MW of contracts for selling solar thermal energy systems by the end of 2011, according to Jayesh Goyal, vice-president of Areva NA sales. Emerging opportunities for solar energy development in various parts of the world, such as Australia, India, the Middle East and the US, may yield the company's solar energy division, Areva Solar, as much as 450 MW of orders by the end of 2012.

GE opens new RE logistics center in Mississippi

GE announced the company's has opened its new renewable energy logistics center in Olive Branch, Mississippi (USA). The new facility represents one of the many steps the company is taking as part of a new strategy to improve customer response times throughout the North American market. The new logistics center will deal with both wind and solar energy projects.
