US DoE chooses Princeton Power Systems for hydropower converter development

August 26th, 2010 | Posted in Hydro | No Comments

The US Department of Energy has chosen Princeton Power Systems for the development of advanced power conversion systems for application in commercial tidal, wave, and other hydropower projects.

The technology uses a high-power (1.5 MW) converter design which allows much higher power density as well as direct connection to a 12 kV (or higher) power lines, without the need for a transformer. This could significantly reduce the space and logistical requirements of marine energy projects. Additionally, the direct power grid connection will increase efficiency of remote marine energy power plants, which will eventually bring down the cost of marine energy derived electricity.
