Kenya getting 13.6 MW wind farm – to be developed by Iberdrola and Gamesa

Iberdrola Ingeniería y Construcción and Gamesa will jointly develop a 13.6 MW wind farm in Ngong, near Kenya's capital, Nairobi. The project is worth about EUR 20 million, and is participated by Iberdrola with a 40% stake, and by Gamesa with a 60% stake. Construction is expected to be completed in about 18 months. The wind farm was ordered as a turnkey project by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), and includes the engineering, supply, construction and commissioning of the wind farm.

Kurayamat solar thermal plant in Egypt opens for business

Solar Millenium announced the Kurayat solar thermal power plant in Egypt, some 100 km south of Cairo, has begun operation. The 150 MW hybrid power plant uses solar thermal technology (solar troughs) combined with natural gas to generate clean electricity. The power plant occupies about 130,000 square meters.

Vestas in contract for V52 units for Cape Verde

Vestas has entered into a supply agreement for the Cabeólica project, which is to be located on the islands of Santiago, Sal, São Vicente and Boavista in Cape Verde. The company is to deliver 30 V52-850 kW units, a total of 25.5 MW of capacity, to be installed at these various locations. Along with the turbines, Vestas is to perform service and maintenance for two years, and provide its remote monitoring system for the installed turbines.

Tanzania building a USD 2 billion hydropower project?

Tanzania is reported to be planning a hydropower project with Brazil, which is estimated to be worth about USD 2 billion. The project, Stiegler's Gorge hydropower station, is to have about 2100 MW of installed capacity. Brazilian technology will be used to generate excess power, which will allow the country to possibly become a net electricity exporter in the region.

Study to assess viability of 50 MW CPV project in South Africa

If an ongoing study returns a positive assessment, the Western Cape (Republic of South Africa), could soon become home for a 50 MW concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) power project. The facility would be located near Touws River, in the Westen Cape.

Hydropower expansion project in Zambia gets USD 105 million financing

Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has received a USD 105 million from the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) for the ongoing hydropower expansion project that will result in an additional 360 MW of power generating capacity at the Kariba North Bank hydropower plant complex. This extension will add to the existing 720 MW of installed capacity in operation. The extension project's costs are estimated at about USD 430 million.

Geothermal Development Company in USD 400 million of pledges for geothermal energy in Kenya

Kenyan geothermal energy company, Geothermal Development Company (GDC), announced it has about USD 400 million in pledges for geothermal energy development in Kenya. This represents about 40% of the amount needed by the company, to fulfill its 10-year plan, which should result in 2000 MW of steam production capacity.

Fluor doing study for huge solar park in South Africa

Fluor has been chosen as the company to perform a feasibility study for a very large scale solar energy development in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The study has been commissioned by the country's Department of Energy. Fluor is to develop a "master" plan for the development of a future 5 GW solar park.

South African government issues RFI for renewable energy development

Abener and Teyma begin work at Hassi R'Mel hybrid solar plant in Algeria

Abener and Teyma, both owned by the Abengoa Group, have started work on the Hassi R'Mel hybrid solar power plant in central Algeria. The plant is located near Hassi R'Mel, the largest natural gas reserve in Africa. The power plant will eventually produce 150 MW of power, with 25% of that coming from solar power generation.
