Minnesota Power switches to direct drive turbines in middle of Bison I wind project construction

Minnesota Power has decided to replace the 17 2.3 MW Siemens turbines initially planned for the second phase of the Bison I wind farm, with the new generation direct drive units, also from Siemens. The company will install 15 SWT-3.0-101 direct drive units, which will yield an additional 10,000 MWh of electrical energy annually.

Deepwater Wind Energy announces 1 GW offshore wind project near Rhode Island

Deepwater Wind Energy announced plans to built a 1000 MW Deepwater Wind Energy Center (DWEC), near the shores of Rhode Island. The project is presented as the "second generation" of offshore wind farms in the United States. The future offshore wind farm is a project that could serve as an offshore wind energy center supplying several US East Coast states with clean electricity. Deepwater plans to begin construction at the wind farm site in 2014, with first wind turbines entering operation state in 2015. This is actually an enlargement of an initially proposed 350 MW offshore wind project two years ago. The newly proposed project will represent an investment of about USD 5 billion.

Duke Energy secures USD 231 million for Top of the World wind farm

Duke Energy announced the company has secured about USD 231 million of financing for the Top of the World wind farm in Casper, Wyoming. The project is in operation, and has 200 MW of installed capacity, featuring 66 GE 2.3 MW wind turbines. Commercial operation at the wind farm started in October this year, and all the power generated at the facility is being sold to PacifiCorp, under a 20-year PPA.

US government starts the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Export Initiative

Solar Power Partners and JCM Capital to develop 200 MW of solar power in Ontario

Solar Power Partners (US) and JCM Capital (Canada) announced the two companies have jointly launched a fund to develop, finance and operate 200 MW of solar power capacity in Ontario. About 20 MW of capacity is already slated for construction in 2011.

NextEra to buy 40 MW of solar capacity in Ontario from First Solar

NextEra Energy entered into agreements with First Solar for purchasing a total of 40 MW of solar projects in Ontario, Canada. First Solar is to continue the development and construction of the solar projects, the Sombra and Moore Solar Energy Centers, each consisting of two 10 MW solar PV projects. NextEra Energy Canada will become the owner and operator of these facilities once they are completed. All power generated from these solar parks will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority under long-term PPAs.

TransAlta commissions two wind farms in Canada totalling 123 MW

TransAlta announced the company has commissioned two new wind farms in Alberta and New Brunswick, adding another 123 MW to the company's wind capacity portfolio, now at 1073 MW. This puts the company at the top spot in terms of installed wind capacity in Canada.

First Wind secures financing for Rollins wind farm in Maine

First Wind announced the company has secured USD 98 million in financing for its Rollins wind farm project, in Prenobscot County, Maine (USA), through Key Bank National Association and Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale . The wind farm is to have 60 MW of installed capacity.

Siemens bulding up wind turbine manufacturing potential worldwide

Siemens announced several additions to the company's wind turbine manufacturing potential with the official openings of wind turbine component manufacturing facilities in China, the US, and plans an investment in a rotor blade manufacturing facility in Ontario, Canada. Additionally, the company plans wind turbine production facilities in China, India and the UK, but also to enter the emerging Russian wind energy market.

Solar Park Initiatives developing 7 MW solar park in Ontario

Solar Park Initiative has signed a letter of intent (LoI) for a 7 MW solar park in Ontario, Canada. The project could generate up to USD 28 million in revenue if completed. It is however, subject to approvals and permissions, before and engineering and development can be done.
