Phoenix Solar building 3.5 MW solar power plant for Saudi Aramco

Phoenix Solar will build a 3.5 MW solar park for the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), the largest oil producer in the world. The company commissioned Phoenix Solar last year to build a testing field featuring several different module technologies, in order to assess which modules would be the best choice for the future 3.5 MW solar park at the company's headquarters in Dhahran. The location of the future solar park is near Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, at the location of the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center, currently under construction.

Gamesa signs deals for 600 MW of wind capacity in China

Jorge Calvet, Chairman of Gamesa, and Mr. Chensu, Chairman of China Guangdong Nuclear Wind Power at the signing of the agreement.

Gamesa announced the company has signed two agreements totalling in 600 MW of wind capacity to be developed in China. The agreements were signed with Guangdong Nuclear Wind Power and China Huadian New Energy Development, 300 MW each, for wind energy projects in the province of Jilin and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in China. Gamesa is to deliver its G9X-2.0 MW units in several batches over the next five year period.

First Solar to supply 25 MW of modules to MBCEL

First Solar and Moser Baer Clean Energy Limited (MBCEL, New Delhi, India) have entered into an agreement under which MBCEL will procure 25 MW of solar modules produced by First Solar for its solar power projects. Delivery of the solar modules is to begin by June 2011.

PNE Wind enters Scottish wind energy market – opens office in Edinburgh

PNE Wind announced the company has opened an office in Edinburgh, Scotland, marking the official entry of the wind development company into the Scottish wind energy market. PNE Wind UK is planning to invest strongly in Britain over the next three year period. The company has already identified several sites in Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Grampian and the Scottish Borders which are good for wind farm development.

GE acquires next-gen wind turbine tower technology

GE has completed the acquisition of Wind Tower Systems (WTS). With this acquisition GE has also acquired technology which will allow the company to install wind turbines at greater heights. With the increase in per unit capacity, and longer wind turbine blades, higher hub heights have become very important. WTS' space frame tower system technology allows hub heights of 100 meters and more. The technology uses a highly engineered and optimized structure capable of handling unique static and dynamic loads that occur during wind turbine operation.

Vestas to deliver 22 wind turbines for wind farm in England

Vestas received an order for 22 V90-2.0 MW units from E.ON Climate and Renewables UK. The wind turbines are to be installed at the wind farm being built in Tween Bridge Moor, in Doncaster, England. The contract includes delivery, installation and commissioning, as well as a 5-year S&M agreement and the remote monitoring system.

Ontario stops offshore wind again – wants more scientific research done

The Canadian province of Ontario has officially halted its approval for any more offshore wind energy projects. The province demands more scientific research to be done in the offshore industry sector, before it will resume with offshore wind development in its waters. The first casualty of this decision will be the 300 MW Kingston wind project in Lake Ontario, which was to be developed by Windstream Energy, according to this Reuters piece.

Gamesa and Northrop Grumman open offshore wind technology center

As announced in early October 2010, Gamesa and Northrop Grumman have now officially launched their offshore wind technology center with the goal to jointly develop the next generation of offshore wind turbines, to be deployed in the US and throughout the world. According to the companies' plan, the first offshore wind turbines for the US market are to be developed by late 2012.

Arise Windpower acquires right to develop 200 MW wind farm in Sweden

Arise Windpower has concluded a partnership agreement with Bergvik Skok and Ownpower Projects (all Swedish companies), acquiring the right to acquire a joint project company called Jädraås Vindkraft, and thus the right to develop its 200 MW wind farm in Sweden. The next phases of the project include supplemental wind condition analyses, assessments of application for a concession for connecting the wind turbines to the power grid, and detailed development planning, all of which are expected to be completed by summer 2011. Construction of the wind farm is to begin in July 2011, while the wind farm could enter commercial operation in 2012.

Enel Green Power and Terrae in partnership to strengthen Italian agro-energy sector

Enel Green Power has signed a partnership agreement with Terrae (Italy), an agro-industrial company aiming to redevelop the beet and sugar sector. As part of the agreement EGP has obtained a 15% stake in the company.
