TÜV Rheinland opens solar test centre in India

August 13th, 2010 | Posted in Solar | No Comments

TÜV Rheinland has opened its seventh laboratory worldwide in Electronics City in the Indian city of Bangalore for testing solar modules and systems. The company has invested 2 million EUR in the new solar test centre, which in particular will offer services to India's growing solar industry.

The test centre has 2,000 square metres of space, including an outside test field of 500 square metres, with equipment such as five climate chambers and two sun simulators. This makes it the most up to date and largest laboratory in the entire South Asian economic area.

India is already planning to install 20,000 MW of PV power by 2020, with 100,000 MW by 2030. TÜV Rheinland will therefore strengthen its service offering in India for solar power stations, encompassing planning, consulting, operation and maintenance. In addition, services will be provided for ensuring the quality and safety of modules and components, as well as monitoring production quality. When testing and certifying according to IEC and other international standards, the experts in the laboratory can make use of the latest test facilities.

Etrion acquires SunPower's 28 MW Montalto di Castro solar park in Italy

August 13th, 2010 | Posted in Solar | No Comments

SunPower announced that Etrion Corporation has signed a 48 million EUR definitive sale and purchase agreement to acquire the equity in the first two phases of the Montalto di Castro solar PV power park, the largest in Italy.

The acquisition of the 20 MW first phase of the project for 36 million EUR has been completed. The acquisition of the 8 MW second phase for 12 million EUR remains subject to standard closing conditions and is expected to close by the end of Q3 2010. SunPower will recognize the sale of the first phase of the project as a return of capital, and will recognize revenue on the sale of the second phase, including previously deferred EPC revenue, upon close of sale, which is expected by the end Q3 2010.

SunPower designed and built the 28 MW power plant in the Lazio region of Italy near Rome, and will provide ongoing operations and maintenance services. The first 20 MW were connected to the grid in November 2009, while the 8 MW second phase was commissioned this month.

Solar Millenium's Blythe solar power project recommended for approval

August 13th, 2010 | Posted in Solar | No Comments

Solar Millenium (subsidiary of Solar Trust of America) announced an important milestone for the company's 242 MW Blythe solar power project, which will be using parabolic trough CSP technology. This project is just one of four 242 MW projects the company is hoping to get development permissions for in the Riverside County, California. The project has now officially been recommended for approval by the California Energy Commission (CEC).

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) already approved a power purchase agreement (PPA) between Solar Millenium and Southern California Edison for two 242 MW solar power plants to be developed near Blythe. The PPA's pertain to a 20-year period.

If Solar Millenium eventually gets approvals for all four projects, California could be looking at almost a gigawatt of new clean power capacity in the near future.

Concentrix Solar inaugurates its first solar power facility in South Africa

August 13th, 2010 | Posted in Solar | No Comments

Concentrix Solar (part of Soitec) announced the inauguration of the company's first solar power project in South Africa, the 60 kW facility at the Aquila Private Game Reserve, Western Cape. Even though this project is a micro generation facility, it represents the official entry of Concentrix Solar into the South African solar energy market (even though the company has been there since 2008) in terms of installed capacity, and is prelude to a much bigger project.

The company is planning a 50 MW solar power plant in the Western Cape, harnessing the country's abundant solar energy potential in that region. Concentrix Solar uses CPV technology (concentrator photovoltaics), using double-axis tracking, providing maximum output throughout the duration of daily sunlight.
