Iberdrola planning to invest EUR 9 billion into renewables from 2010-2012

February 25th, 2010 | Posted in General Hydro Wind | Comments (3)

Iberdrola has announced a strategic investment plan involving some EUR 18 billion in total to be invested over the period of two years, from 2010 to 2012. Of the total amount, EUR 9 billion is planned for renewable energy, while the the other half of the investment funding is to be used for networks (EUR 6.3 billion) and generation and supply (EUR 2.7 billion).

Broken down according to markets, the US market will receive about EUR 7 billion (39%), the UK market about EUR 4.5 billion (25%), Spain EUR 4.3 billion (24%), while Latin America and other markets will get about EUR 2.2 billion (12%).

Along with investment plans, the company plans to diversify further internationally. Iberdrola sees the investment plan as means to face the future with optimism, while at the same time offering a "valid option for driving economic growth and recovery".

The company's current strategic areas of focus are strengthening its position in the Atlantic Area (US, UK, Brazil), creating foundations for future growth in these areas. For example, Iberdrola has been awarded a development zone as part of Round 3 offshore development in the UK, one of the biggest ones, which will bring about 7.2 GW of new capacity to the company's portfolio. In the US, the company is taking advantage of the formidable development climate created by the US government, with more than 23.5 GW of capacity lined up for development. Along with wind energy projects, Iberdrola is also involved in major hydropower development around the world. In Spain alone, about 1 GW of hydropower capacity will come online by 2012, and in Brazil the company is also developing 1 GW of hydropower capacity through a dozen power station projects.

Shell, Cosan

Shell and Cosan have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU), with the intention to form a circa $12 billion joint venture in Brazil for the production of ethanol, sugar and power; and the supply, distribution and retail of transportation fuels.

Under the deal, both companies would contribute certain existing Brazilian assets to the JV, whereas Shell would pour out a total of $1.625 billion in cash, payable over two years. The ultimate goal is to establish a scalable and profitable position in sustainable biofuels by building a market-leading position in the most efficient ethanol producing country in the world.

With annual production capacity of about 2 billion litres and significant growth aspirations, the JV would be one of the world's largest ethanol producers. In addition, the inclusion of Shell's equity interests in Iogen and Codexis would potentially enable the JV to deploy next generation biofuels technologies in the future.

The two parties will now maintain exclusive negotiations towards a binding joint venture agreement, which shall be subject to final transactional documentation, due diligence, agreement between the two parties on important sustainability issues, regulatory approvals and respective corporate approvals.

Brazilian government issues license for controversial 11 GW hydropower mega-project in the Amazon

February 3rd, 2010 | Posted in Hydro | No Comments

Two days ago the Brazilian government has granted the preliminary license for the hydropower project to planned in the middle of the Amazon, on the Xingu River. The new mega-hydropower plant, Belo Monte, to have about 11 GW of installed capacity, has been been granted the preliminary license based on the resolution of about 40 conditions covering issues related to water quality, wildlife, sanitation, local population, social compensation and rehab of degraded areas, to name a few. One of the major changes in the design of the project is the reduction of flooded areas upstream from the dam.

The preliminary license, however, doesn't allow any developments to begin, but simply allows the auction for the project. If developed and completed, it will be the third largest hydropower project in the world, and the second largest in Brazil. The project will have two water accumulations, both at about 516 km2 in area. The project represents an investment of about USD 12.3-17.5 billion, with the BNDES bank being the main financer of the project, with about a third of the projects total cost.

DESA and Renova award GE Technology with wind turbine supply deal

January 28th, 2010 | Posted in Wind | No Comments

GE-15mwGE has received commitments for supplying wind turbines for more than 400 MW of new capacity to be developed in Brazil. This will be the first time GE wind energy technology is deployed in this South American country.

The Brazilian government has held its first energy only auction in December 2009, with focus on wind power. This auction resulted in more than 1.8 GW of wind generation awarded to various developers and utilities in the country, and abroad. DESA (Dobreve Energia, S.A.) received rights for 144 MW of capacity to be developed in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, while Renova Energia was awarded rights for 270 MW of capacity in the state of Bahia. Both companies have chosen GE's 1.5 MW wind turbines to be used in these projects. Both projects are expected to be completed by July 2012.

So far, Brazil has relied mostly on hydropower for generating clean electricity. The country is now trying to turn its focus more on other forms of renewable energy, to create a more diversified portfolio. Brazil has favorable wind conditions all along its 4600 mile coastline. Currently, the country has about 600 MW of installed wind capacity, with another 450 MW under development.
