Vestas announced an order for 150 MW of wind turbines from Energisa, for various wind energy projects in Brazil. The order consists of 75 2 MW units, to be delivered and installed at five wind farms being developed at Rio Grande do Norte. The projects are Ventos de Sao Miguelm, Renascença I, Renascença II, Renascença III and Renascença IV.

Uruguay's national electricity company (UTE) has awarded the contract to build and operate a 50 MW wind farm in this South American country to Abengoa. The wind farm will be located in the Tacuarembó region, and will supply about 50,000 people with clean electricity.

BP announced the company is to acquire a majority stake in Brazilian ethanol and sugar producer Companhia Nacional de Açúcar e Álcool (CNAA) from Açúcar e Álcool Fundo de Investimento em Participações and Açúcar e Álcool II Fundo de Investimento em Participações, thus expanding the company's production capacity in Brazil to about 9 million barrels of ethanol (equivalent). BP will pay about USD 680 million for an 83% stake in CNAA, and will refinance the full amount of the company's outstanding long term debt.

GDF Suez (France) and Quiñenco Group (Chile) have formed an energy group in Paris, with focus on dealing with renewable energy and other unconventional sources of energy. The establishment of this bi-national energy group was sponsored by the energy ministers of both countries. The chairmen of the newly established group will be Gérard Mestrallet, Chairman and CEO of GDF SUEZ, and Guillermo Luksic, President of the Quiñenco Group.

Alstom has entered into a USD 500 million contract with Norte Energia of Brazil for the supply and installation of power equipment at the Belo Monte hydropower project, recently approved by the Brazilian authorities. Belo Monte will have 11.23 GW of installed capacity once completed.

The new company will develop elite seeds for Jatropha, a biomass crop used for the production of biofuels. In order to expand its R&D activities, SG Biofuels has hired Fernando Reinach, a genomics innovator, to be the company's senior advisor for this market.

Suzlon announced a 218 MW order coming from Brazil from Martifer Renováveis, a Brazilian renewable energy company. This is the second order from this company. Martifier is to set up, operate and maintain the 218 MW project spread out across Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. Suzlon will supply 104 S88-2.1 MW units, which when installed and fully operational, will produce enough clean electricity to power over 160,000 average homes in Brazil.

ABB signed a contract worth USD 32 million to build four transformer stations along with the overhead transmission lines in Brazil. The new power transmission facilities will serve to accommodate about 300 MW of wind power capacity to be installed at 14 wind farms. The order comes from Renova Energia, a Brazilian renewable energy developer.
