AMSC and Sinovel enter expand strategic partnership

May 26th, 2010 | Posted in General Wind

American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) and Sinovel Wind Group (China) have expanded their strategic partnership to include additional wind turbine designs for onshore and offshore wind energy markets. The two companies design and jointly develop a new range of advanced technology, multi-megawatt class wind turbines, which will be marketed and sold worldwide by Sinovel.

Sinovel currently offers two wind turbine models to the market – the SL1500 (1.5 MW) and the newer SL3000 (3 MW) units. A 5 MW unit has also recently been developed as a joint effort between Sinovel and AMSC Windtec. At the moment Sinovel is the largest wind turbine producer in China, and has been "promoted" to be the third largest producer in the world. The company is aiming for further growth in the coming years.

AMSC receives new order from Sinovel for USD 445 million worth of core electrical components for wind turbines

May 18th, 2010 | Posted in Wind

American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) has received a new order for core electrical components to be installed in Sinovel's 1.5 MW wind turbines over the course of the next 30 months. The supply deal is worth USD 445 million, with the first shipments starting in early 2011.

Sinovel will use AMSC's electrical components for its SL1500 wind turbine. There are plans, however, to increase production of the company's 3 MW units, used at the first offshore wind farm in China, but also to install the first 5 MW units by the end of 2010. Sinovel uses AMSC Windtec designs in these units, as well as AMSC's power electronics.

The Chinese market is on its way to become the largest market for wind energy in the coming years, and Sinovel's business is experiencing major growth along with it. Currently, the company is rated the third largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world, having supplied 3.9 GW of wind turbines in 2009. The company is planning to become the world's largest wind turbine manufacturer withing the next five years.

American Superconductor Corporation receives order for 5 MW wind turbine control systems

March 25th, 2010 | Posted in Wind

American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) received an order from Sinovel, one of the largest Chines wind turbine manufacturers, for initial 5 MW wind turbine electrical control systems.

Sinovel is developing a 5 MW unit, to include alongside the 1.5 and 3 MW units already offered in the company's product portfolio. The new wind turbine is a doubly fed induction unit, for which AMSC is expected to deliver the electrical control systems in the second half of 2010. The new SL 5000 models are expected to be erected for the first time within the next 12 months, while full production of the new units will commence in 2011. Once finalized, the SL 5000 will be China's largest wind turbine.

The Chinese wind energy market has experienced tremendous growth from 2008 to the end of 2009, with installed capacity doubling over this period.

Avanti Wind Systems to supply two service lifts for prototype wind towers in China

October 28th, 2009 | Posted in Wind

avanti-tower-liftAvanti Wind Systems and Chinese Sinovel have announced the signing of a contract under which Avanti will install service lifts in two 3 MW prototype wind turbine towers being built by Sinovel in Zhangjiakou in Inner Mongolia.

Avanti service lifts run on a wire system independent from the tower ladders. The lifts enable technicians to reach the middle and top parts of the tower without having to climb the towers using ladders outside. This makes maintenance and service a lot easier and safer. The lift system can be used before the wind turbine is ready. Under the signed contract, Avanti will also provide training for personell who will be working on the finished turbine later.

In addition to this contract, Avanti has also signed another contract for 19 service lifts which are to be installed on another wind turbine site at Zhangjiakou in the Hebei Province. The company has already installed a service lift at the Face 1 Project this year, but has now been given the job to install an additional 19 lifts in the Face 2 Project. The towers in question are 1.5 MW Sinovel units.
